Abstract

Teaching Methodology
Classroom interaction, second language acquisition, teacher-student interaction, teaching strategies.
This research investigates the factors hindering effective teacher-student interaction in second language acquisition classrooms and proposes practical strategies to foster a more communicative learning environment. The study identifies four key reasons for interaction breakdown: overly complex or inappropriate questioning techniques, insufficient wait-time for student responses, irrelevant or uninteresting speaking topics, and a predominance of teacher-fronted instruction. Drawing on both theoretical insights from second language acquisition and extensive personal teaching experience, the paper suggests measures to overcome these challenges. Recommended strategies include designing appropriate and engaging questions, providing ample preparation and processing time for students, selecting learner-centered and motivating topics, and incorporating more student-centered activities such as pair and group work. The research emphasizes the importance of creating a non-threatening learning environment that prioritizes meaning-making and encourages active student participation, ultimately aiming to equip teachers with the knowledge and tools to enhance successful classroom communication.
