Abstract

zoology
Yaks (Bos grunniens), Yak husbandry, High-altitude livestock, Kishtwar Himalayas, Livelihood contribution, Sustainable yak farming, Climate-resilient livestock
Yaks play a vital role in the socio-economic and cultural fabric of highland communities in Kishtwar, particularly in the Padder Marwah and Warwan, valleys. Adapted to extreme climatic conditions at altitudes of 3000–5000 meters, yaks serve as a critical resource for livelihoods, contributing to milk, meat, fiber, fuel, transportation, and fertilizer. This review highlights the domestication history, feeding behavior, seasonal adaptation, and physiological challenges faced by yaks—particularly the effects of pasture scarcity during winter leading to weight loss and growth retardation. The review further explores yak reproduction, microbial communities, and the nutritional composition of yak milk and meat. The multipurpose utility and resilience of yaks underscore their indispensable role in sustaining mountain economies and cultures.
