ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to formulate and evaluate a herbal shampoo using natural plant extracts beneficial for hair and scalp health. The formulation included Psidii guajavae folium, Eclipta alba, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Sapindus mukorossi, and Aloe barbadensis Miller, selected for their properties such as promoting hair growth, reducing dandruff, cleansing the scalp, improving hair softness, and preventing hair fall. The study also aimed to compare its effectiveness with commercially available shampoos. Distilled water was heated to 60–70°C, and herbal extracts were added with continuous stirring to obtain a uniform mixture. Guar gum was dispersed separately and incorporated to achieve suitable viscosity. After cooling below 40°C, preservative, vitamin E, and lavender oil were added. The formulation was evaluated for parameters including appearance, pH, foaming ability, foam stability, dirt dispersion, viscosity, surface tension, washability, wetting time, antimicrobial activity, and skin irritation. The prepared shampoo showed satisfactory results comparable to marketed shampoo in terms of appearance, consistency, and pH. It exhibited good foaming ability, cleansing action, washability, and spreadability, with slightly lower foam volume. The formulation also demonstrated acceptable viscosity, low surface tension, good dirt dispersion, and no skin irritation. Overall, the herbal shampoo showed effective cleansing, conditioning, and anti-dandruff properties, making it a safe and effective alternative to marketed products.
