Abstract

This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of college students at Davao de Oro State College. Anchored on the concept of meaning-making and personal growth, the study aimed to understand how students perceive, navigate, and reflect upon their counseling journeys. Eight undergraduate students who had undergone at least two individual counseling sessions participated in the study. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, allowing participants to share their personal narratives, challenges, coping mechanisms, and insights gained from the counseling process. Findings revealed that students initially experienced hesitation and emotional conflict in seeking counseling, largely influenced by cultural values such as hiya and stigma toward mental health. However, as the counseling process progressed, participants reported developing trust in the therapeutic relationship, which became a crucial factor in their openness and engagement. The study further found that counseling served as a transformative space where students reconstructed their personal narratives, gained self-awareness, and developed adaptive coping strategies. Participants highlighted improvements in emotional regulation, decision-making, and interpersonal relationships. Counseling also facilitated a shift from feelings of helplessness to a sense of personal agency and empowerment. Despite these positive outcomes, participants identified barriers such as limited access, time constraints, and initial fear of vulnerability. These challenges shaped their overall counseling experience but were gradually overcomes through supportive therapeutic relationships. The study concludes that counseling is not merely a support service but meaningful developmental process that fosters identity formation, resilience, and holistic well-being. The findings provide valuable insights for enhancing culturally responsive and student-centered counseling programs in higher education institutions.
