This paper presents a method to improve the pattern characteristics of the TEM horn antenna for 2to14 GHz frequency band. The conventional TEM horn antenna introduces few fluctuations in the main lobe radiation pattern over the higher frequency band, i.e., 10to14 GHz. This was a motivation to propose a new method to remove the aforementioned impact by carving a rounded shape to the open end of exponentially tapered plates. The associated curvature of this arc is to optimize and completely remove the fluctuation. This paper presents the design and optimization of ultra-wideband (UWB) transverse electromagnetic (TEM) horn antennas even capable for ground penetrating radar applications. The numerical simulations of electromagnetic wave propagation are performed and optimized in the time domain for a preliminary and modified TEM horn antenna. The TEM horn antennas have some reactions and ringing in higher frequencies. These reacts are reduced by optimization of the antenna structure. The time domain characteristic, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) and gain of the antennas are computed. The measurement results show that the improved TEM horn antenna structure exhibits low VSWR as well as radiation pattern over 2to14 GHz frequency band. The simulations are carried out using CST microwave studio and XFdtd EM simulations software.
