Over the last decade, the online travel industry has been undergoing a major change– adapting to new technologies and trends available on the Internet. The emergence of social media is of key importance in this change, which represents different types of user-generated content (UGC) such as blogs, virtual communities, wikis, social networks, and media files shared on sites like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Flicker. This paper reviews and analyses the research publications focusing on social media in tourism. This paper suggests that social media plays different roles at different stages of a tourist travel plans. Social media serves as a tool for source of inspiration, self expression, communication and entertainment.
