Municipal wastewater or sewage is the byproduct of many uses of water such as bathing, laundry and flushing the toilet. After the water has been used, it becomes the wastewater, and it flows to the wastewater treatment plant through Sewer line. Recycling municipal wastewater is becoming an important part of water management cycle a change in living style in the developing countries means that more people would be willing to re-use this treated water. Aluminum sulfate (alum), ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride were commonly used as coagulants. However, a possible link of Alzheimer's disease with conventional aluminium based coagulants has become an issue in wastewater treatment. Hence, special attention has shift towards using biodegradable polymer, chitosan in treatment, which are more environmental friendly. Moreover, cactus is natural organic coagulant obtained from mucilage of cactus present at cladodes of cactus plant. Experiments were carried out on municipal wastewater by varying the operating parameters, which are cactus bio-coagulant dosage and pH in order to study their effect in flocculation process by using cactus coagulant. The characteristics of the wastewater to be treated were also studied such as COD, Turbidity and pH change was found. The sample of influent and effluent were collected and these parameters were tested. The treatment provides better performance and results in terms of COD, Turbidity and pH change. Various aspects associated with use of cactus bio-coagulant. Cactus Opuntia Ficus Indica as Bio-coagulant in treatment of coagulation and flocculation is an economical treatment process and can be employed in Primary sedimentation unit in the wastewater treatment plant.
