Abstract

Indirect Speech Acts, Indian English Fiction, Cultural Contexts, Pragmatics, Communication, Social Hierarchies, Conflict Avoidance, Speech Act Theory
This paper explores the role of indirect speech acts within the cultural contexts of Indian English fiction, with a focus on understanding how these linguistic phenomena reflect and influence cultural narratives. By examining selected works from prominent Indian writers such as Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, and Jhumpa Lahiri, the study seeks to uncover the multifaceted ways in which indirect speech acts are employed to convey meaning, navigate social hierarchies, and maintain interpersonal relationships. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of speech act theory and pragmatics, the analysis underscores the importance of cultural contexts in interpreting indirect communication.Indirect speech acts are a cornerstone of pragmatic communication, allowing speakers to imply meanings and perform actions without direct expression. These acts are particularly prevalent in cultures that value indirectness, politeness, and social harmony—characteristics often associated with Indian society. The hybrid nature of Indian English fiction, which merges local cultural elements with the English language, provides a fertile ground for exploring how indirect speech acts operate within specific cultural settings. The literature review contextualizes the study within the broader field of speech act theory, highlighting key contributions by scholars such as J.L. Austin and John Searle. It also reviews previous research on the impact of cultural contexts on the use and interpretation of indirect speech acts, emphasizing the relevance of this approach for analyzing Indian English fiction.
