Abstract

Sarshap, Tila, Taila, Murchana, Amurchna
Sneha Kalpana, a traditional Ayurvedic dosage form, is extensively used to treat a variety of ailments, utilizing oleaginous substances such as Ghrita, Taila, Vasa, and Majja. Among these, Ghrita and Taila are predominantly employed. Sneha Kalpana involves a pharmaceutical process wherein active ingredients are extracted using liquid media, herbal pastes (Kalka), and oleaginous bases. A crucial preparatory step in this process is Sneha Murchana, first detailed in the Gudhartha Deepika commentary on Sharangadhara Samhita and later elaborated in Bhaishajya Ratnavali and other classical Ayurvedic texts. This procedure enhances the medicinal properties of Sneha by eliminating impurities, rancidity, and undesirable odors, thereby improving therapeutic efficacy. The preparation of Taila Murchana involves heating Sarshapa Taila to remove froth, adding water and powdered herbs, and boiling until moisture evaporates. Analytical studies evaluate parameters such as specific gravity, acid value, refractive index, saponification value, moisture content, and iodine value, revealing Murchana’s potential to extend shelf life, enhance stability, and improve the quality of fats and oils. Murchana’s significance lies in its ability to refine oils, delay rancidity, and enhance physicochemical properties, making it indispensable for Sneha formulations. The herbal components used act as antioxidants, further boosting therapeutic efficacy. As global interest in Ayurveda grows, the Murchana process is critical for ensuring the quality and effectiveness of medicated oils, emphasizing its role as a prerequisite for all medicinal oil preparations.
