Vikram Seth’s prose fiction, particularly A Suitable Boy and An Equal Music, offers a fertile ground for exploring the evolving dimensions of cosmopolitanism and hybrid identity in postcolonial literature. Through his depictions of characters negotiating the boundaries of culture, class, religion, and modernity, Seth challenges monolithic notions of identity and nationhood. This paper investigates how his narrative worlds become dynamic spaces where tradition is not merely preserved or rejected but continually redefined through transnational encounters and personal choices. In A Suitable Boy, the quest for matrimonial and political alignment is deeply tied to the larger tension between colonial legacy and emerging national consciousness. Seth blends Hindi, Urdu, and English idioms into a realist narrative structure, suggesting a hybrid literary voice reflective of India’s multilingual fabric. Meanwhile, An Equal Music uses Western classical music as a transcultural bridge to explore diasporic alienation, memory, and emotional loss. The novel’s portrayal of diasporic life in Europe highlights a form of cultural cosmopolitanism rooted in both displacement and belonging. By portraying characters who embody cultural duality, Seth questions the boundaries of home, identity, and authenticity in a globalised world. This study argues that Seth’s novels perform a narrative negotiation between rootedness and fluidity, tradition and transformation. In doing so, they not only reflect postcolonial identity crises but also articulate a modern literary cosmopolitanism that transcends borders without abandoning the significance of cultural specificity.
