Parental absence, academic performance, learners’ educational outcome
Parental absence is a growing concern in education, affecting students' academic performance, learning engagement, and motivation. This study examines the impact of different types and causes of parental absence on pupils' academic outcomes in Tapaz Integrated School, Malipayon Elementary School, and San Vicente, Sta. Josefa District. Findings indicate that absence of mother (48%) is the most common, followed by absence of father (27%) and absence of both parents (25%). Work-related reasons account for the majority of absences (56%), followed by separation (36%) and parental death (8%). Despite concerns about parental absence the data showed that that 10% achieved an outstanding rating, 41%, received a satisfactory rating, 38% attained a very satisfactory rating and 10% attained moderately satisfactory. Learning engagement remains high with an overall mean of 4.13 indicating a high level of learning engagement among the pupils. Similarly, motivation levels are also high, with pupils displaying strong goal-setting behaviors and intrinsic motivation, reflected in an overall mean motivation score of 4.18 indicating that pupils are motivated towards their studies. Moreover, there is no statistically significant difference in pupils’ academic performance in terms of grades when grouped according to the types of parental absence. This is also true on pupils learning engagement and pupils’ motivation. When grouped according to causes of parental absence, results indicate no statistically significant differences in students' performance in terms of grades, learning engagement, and pupils’ motivation.
