Abstract

Educational Administration, National Drug Education Program Coordinators, drug prevention, lived experiences, challenges, coping mechanisms, insights, phenomenological study
This study sought to explore and understand the lived experiences, challenges, coping mechanisms, and insights of National Drug Education Program (NDEP) Coordinators facilitating preventive initiatives in public secondary schools within Laak, Davao de Oro. Employing a phenomenological approach, the research examined how these educators fulfilled their roles amidst systemic, institutional, and contextual challenges in implementing drug prevention programs. Through in-depth interviews, the findings revealed that participants encountered barriers such as insufficient financial support, emotional exhaustion, logistical constraints, and limited institutional backing. Nevertheless, they exhibited resilience, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose rooted in service and advocacy. The results illustrated how coordinators navigated their responsibilities through collaborative partnerships, strategic engagement, and faith-driven motivation. Their efforts led to strengthened leadership, greater empathy, and reinforced commitment to youth empowerment and community safety. Participants also emphasized the importance of volunteerism, values-based education, and holistic approaches in sustaining program momentum. These experiences deepened their understanding of leadership as a service-oriented endeavor and reinforced their dedication to fostering drug-free learning environments. The study underscores the need for sustainable institutional support, including budget allocation, capacity-building programs, stakeholder collaboration, and recognition of the coordinators’ critical role. Participants expressed hopes for long-term program institutionalization and greater emphasis on preventive education across all school levels. These findings call on education leaders and policymakers to establish clear structures that empower coordinators, elevate youth engagement, and ensure impactful drug prevention in basic education.
