Abstract

English Language Teaching
English Language Teaching, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), clinical communication, language proficiency, premedical English module, quasi-experimental study.
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of an English Pre-Medical Students Module in enhancing the language proficiency of pre-medical students. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was utilized, involving 40 purposively selected second-year students from allied health programs at Tagum Doctors College, Inc. The students underwent a pre-test before receiving the instructional intervention based on the specialized English module, which was aligned with the principles of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). After one session of module implementation, a post-test was administered. Descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results revealed a significant improvement in students' language proficiency, as evidenced by an increase from A2 (Basic User) to B2 (Independent User) based on CEFR benchmarks. The statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (p < 0.001), indicating the effectiveness of the intervention. The findings suggest that integrating tailored ESP-based instructional materials can greatly enhance students’ academic and clinical communication skills. Thus, the study recommends incorporating the English Pre-Medical Students Module into allied health curricula to better prepare students for professional healthcare communication.
