Abstract

Street children represent one of the most vulnerable groups in urban societies, often facing multifaceted challenges that affect their social behaviour, psychological well-being, and capacity for social adjustment. This study investigates the social behavioural patterns and social adjustment of 240 street children residing in rehabilitation homes in the twin cities of Hyderabad, India. Using a descriptive and cross-sectional research design, the study examines the influence of demographic and familial variables—including age, gender, education level, family type, and domicile—on children’s adaptability and social interactions within institutional settings. Findings indicate a predominance of older adolescents (16–18 years) and rural-origin children, with educational attainment positively correlating with social adjustment. Gender distribution was balanced, highlighting the need for gender-sensitive interventions. Family type and reasons for leaving home revealed complex patterns of vulnerability, emphasizing the role of orphanhood, domestic abuse, and migration in shaping social behaviour. The study underscores the importance of age-appropriate educational support, psychosocial interventions, and context-sensitive rehabilitation programs to facilitate reintegration and long-term empowerment. These insights provide empirical guidance for policymakers, social workers, and NGOs aiming to design effective rehabilitation strategies for street children.
