Abstract

Art
Incitement, Propaganda, Political Activism, Freedom of Speech and Expression
Art and music have long played a hand in protest since the dawn of time, whether through subtleties or by direct incitement, the two have always been around. However, the definition of conflict has evolved and thus, so has protest. Therefore, using four artists; Barbara Kruger, Banksy, Hozier and Arivu, the evolution of conflict into perceived and actual conflict will be looked at, as well as how they use their platforms against these conflicts. The artists talk of a multitude of issues— they speak out against misogyny, war, homophobia and casteism which are seen through their various artworks and lyrics. There is also a popular concern of these, and other artists using their platforms to spread an agenda and incite emotions, or to spread propaganda, but there is a significant difference between political activism and propaganda, which will be highlighted in the paper. There is also the view of the opposition, which walks the fine line of political activism and propaganda, largely depending on the intent to incite. There are certain questions that have been consistently raised in regards to the freedom of speech and expression in regards to music and art, and how they can be used to bring about actual conflict, but the lack of it could potentially lead to perceived conflict. In this paper, the difference between actual and perceived conflict will be looked at, as well the difference between political activism and propaganda through artists.
