Effective waste management and public sanitation are essential pillars of smart city development. Traditional manual waste collection systems often fall short due to labour intensity, inefficiency, and poor hygiene. This project proposes ECOMATIC, an intelligent, autonomous cleaning and waste segregation robot designed to operate in outdoor environments such as roadsides, campuses, and public places. The primary objective is to automate both the collection and real-time classification of waste using sensor-based technologies and an embedded control system. The robot is powered by a Node MCU microcontroller, selected for its built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, GPIO expandability, and compact footprint. It serves as the central processing unit for motor control, sensor monitoring, and actuator coordination. A DC motor, driven by an L298N H-Bridge motor driver, propels the robot and rotates a front-mounted cleaning brush that sweeps waste into an onboard chamber. Waste categorization is achieved using a soil moisture sensor, which classifies debris as either wet (e.g., food waste, tissues) or dry (e.g., paper, plastic). Once detected, a SG90 servo motor actuates a gate mechanism to segregate the waste into the appropriate bin. Additionally, the system includes an IR sensor for object detection and line-following, enhancing the robot's path-planning capability, while ultrasonic sensing enables real-time obstacle avoidance and gesture-triggered bin opening for manual public waste disposal. The integration of these sensors enables a hygienic, touch-free experience for users and efficient autonomous operation in dynamic public environments. In the age of rapid urbanization and technological advancement, smart cities are emerging as a solution to the growing challenges of population density, environmental degradation, and inefficient infrastructure. Among the foundational aspects of smart city development is effective waste management and public sanitation, which directly impacts environmental sustainability, public health, and urban aesthetics. Despite the increasing volume of waste generated daily, traditional waste collection and disposal methods remain largely manual, labor-intensive, and prone to inefficiencies. These systems often result in unhygienic conditions, irregular collection schedules, and significant human exposure to hazardous waste. Future enhancements such as solar-powered battery charging, cloud-based IoT dashboards for remote monitoring, GPS-based path planning, and AI-based waste identification using image processing will further elevate the system’s intelligence and utility. Initial testing results demonstrate an average waste collection efficiency of 85% and segregation accuracy of 88%, validating the robot’s operational effectiveness. The system is scalable, cost-effective, and compatible with future enhancements, including IoT-based monitoring, solar-powered charging.
