Abstract English speaking ability has become an essential skill for university students in the context of globalization and academic communication. Despite its importance, many students experience significant anxiety when required to speak English in academic environments. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by university students, particularly those from non-English majors, in dealing with English speaking anxiety. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving students at the Asian University of Bangladesh. The findings reveal that students’ anxiety is influenced by several interrelated factors, including fear of making grammatical and pronunciation mistakes, limited vocabulary, low self-confidence, and concern about negative evaluation from teachers and peers. In addition, insufficient opportunities for speaking practice and less interactive teaching methods further intensify students’ anxiety. The study also identifies several coping strategies used by students, such as thorough preparation, relaxation techniques, positive self-talk, and consistent practice in everyday communication. The results highlight the importance of creating supportive and psychologically safe learning environments that encourage active participation. Therefore, the study recommends the implementation of more interactive, student-centered, and communicative teaching approaches to reduce speaking anxiety and enhance students’ confidence in using English within academic contexts.
