The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme in India plays a critical role in addressing child nutrition, health, and early education. Central to its implementation are Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), who often serve as the primary interface between state services and rural communities. This study investigates the socio-demographic characteristics and economic conditions of AWWs in Nizamabad District, Telangana, to understand how factors such as age, marital status, religion, caste category, educational attainment, household income, expenditure patterns, and family composition shape their professional and personal lives. Using a survey-descriptive design, data were collected from 364 AWWs selected through stratified random sampling across multiple mandals in the district. Statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations, revealed that the workforce is predominantly composed of married, middle-aged women with relatively high educational qualifications. While Backward Classes (BC) and Scheduled Castes (SC) constitute a significant share of the sample, income analysis highlights marked economic vulnerability, especially among SC, ST, and BC-C groups. Household expenditure patterns further indicate that family type and the number of dependents influence financial resilience, with joint families generally reporting higher spending capacity compared to nuclear and extended households. The findings underscore that despite their educational preparedness and commitment, many AWWs operate under economic constraints shaped by structural inequalities. Recognizing these intersecting socio-economic dynamics is essential for policymakers to design targeted interventions that can improve both the welfare of Anganwadi Workers and the effectiveness of ICDS delivery. This district-level evidence contributes to the broader discourse on gendered labour, caste-based disparities, and social welfare implementation in rural India.
