Abstract

FASHION TECHNOLOGY
Biodegradable button, PLA composite, coconut pith, upcycled denim fiber, compression molding, TGA, DSC, DTA, impact strength, pull strength, circular economy.
The global fashion and textile industry generates enormous quantities of non-biodegradable waste, particularly through the mass use of petroleum-based plastic accessories such as buttons. These accessories are functionally trivial yet environmentally costly, contributing significantly to microplastic pollution and landfill accumulation. This review examines the scientific literature underlying the development of bio-composite garment buttons fabricated from Polylactic Acid (PLA), coconut pith (coir pith), and upcycled denim textile fibres — collectively constituting a fully waste-derived, biodegradable composite system. The review critically evaluates literature on natural fibre-reinforced polymer composites, the material properties of PLA as a biopolymer matrix, coconut pith as an agricultural by-product filler, and denim fibre waste as a reinforcement agent. Surface treatment methodologies, compression moulding parameters, and biodegradation mechanisms are also reviewed. The synthesis reveals that PLA-based bio-composites reinforced with natural and upcycled fibres exhibit adequate mechanical strength for garment accessory applications while demonstrating significantly superior biodegradation performance compared to conventional plastics. Research gaps, particularly in standardised testing protocols for bio-composite accessories and denim-specific fibre recycling streams, are identified, and directions for future work are proposed.
