Abstract

Educational
Digital Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Preservation, National Digital Archaeology Mission (NDAM), Post-Colonial Memory, 3D Documentation Technologies Heritage Representation and Accessibility
This study investigates how India’s National Digital Archaeology Mission (NDAM), launched in 2023 as part of a broader heritage informatics push under the Ministry of Culture with an estimated ₹3,000 crore allocation (Ministry of Culture, 2023), is reshaping cultural memory, heritage accessibility, and representation through the deployment of cutting-edge technologies such as 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, LiDAR mapping, and hyperspectral imaging that are now being applied to sites like the Ajanta and Ellora caves, Sannati–Kanaganahalli Buddhist stupa, and antiquities in regional museums such as Mysuru, with the study’s objectives being to critically examine the role of digitization in both preserving fragile archaeological remains and democratizing access for local communities, researchers, and global audiences, while simultaneously interrogating the politics of representation in a post-colonial Indian context where questions of ownership, authenticity, and sovereignty over digital heritage emerge, and the methodology adopted includes a mixed-methods empirical framework combining archival analysis of NDAM policy documents and digital outputs, semi-structured interviews with archaeologists, museum curators, and policymakers, user-experience surveys of digital archive platforms, and digital ethnography of NDAM’s public portals, yielding findings that highlight how NDAM has significantly expanded access to heritage materials—demonstrated by over 1.2 million online interactions recorded by the Archaeological Survey of India’s digital platforms in 2024 (ASI, 2024)—and contributed to new forms of heritage tourism and academic collaboration, yet at the same time raising critical issues of digital exclusion due to infrastructural gaps, intellectual property disputes, risks of digital colonialism through reliance on foreign cloud infrastructures, and uneven representation of marginalized community heritage, and the implications of the study suggest that while NDAM offers a transformative model for large-scale cultural heritage digitization in the Global South, its long-term sustainability, inclusivity, and ethical stewardship will require the integration of open-access data regimes, AI-enabled artifact classification, blockchain for provenance validation, and participatory community-driven digital storytelling to ensure that digital archaeology in India does not replicate colonial epistemologies but instead fosters equitable cultural participation and resilient memory futures in the twenty-first century.
