The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a landmark reform in India’s education sector, introduced after more than three decades with the aim of making the system more holistic, flexible, and aligned with 21st-century needs. It envisions universal access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability across all levels of education, with a strong focus on nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning. This paper presents an exploratory analysis of the five-year journey of NEP 2020, examining its vision, implementation status, achievements, and persisting challenges. Relying on secondary data, government progress reports, and scholarly literature, the study assesses reforms in areas such as school education restructuring, higher education governance, teacher preparation, vocational education integration, and the expansion of digital learning ecosystems. The findings suggest notable progress in key domains, including the prioritization of foundational literacy and numeracy, curriculum and pedagogical reforms, flexibility through the introduction of multidisciplinary approaches in higher education, and the promotion of skill development pathways. At the same time, the analysis underscores critical challenges related to financing, institutional capacity-building, teacher shortages, digital infrastructure gaps, and disparities between rural and urban contexts. The paper emphasizes that while NEP 2020 offers a forward-looking and inclusive framework, its ambitious goals will require sustained political will, adequate resource allocation, effective collaboration among stakeholders, and continuous monitoring mechanisms to ensure accountability. Overall, the study highlights that the first five years of NEP implementation have set the stage for transformation, but achieving the 2030 targets will depend on addressing systemic bottlenecks with urgency and innovation.
